What is Radio Maria?
RADIO MARIA is a broadcasting initiative, which was started in Italy by a group of Catholics, both priests and lay people. It aims at spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to all people of good will. The radio is not commercially funded through advertisement, but lives solely by means of the generous donations of its listeners and the contributions of its volunteers.
The World Family of Radio Maria
The World Family of Radio Maria, established in 1998 is a natural consequence of the founding of so many new Radio Maria stations throughout the world. It is a project that has come into existence as an answer to the calling of Our Lady, who keeps in her heart the desire that the prayers and praises of her children be raised up in some part of the world, IN EVERY HOUR of the full twenty four hour span of a day. All national radio stations of Radio Maria enjoy membership in this association. Through the World Family they share common operating standards, resources, and by joint effort, they optimise the operation of this new means of evangelization. To date, Radio Maria broadcasts in local languages in 25 different nations.
Missionaries on the airways
Radio Maria has a pre-eminently missionary spirit. Its goal is to take root in every nation. Wherever there are priests and lay persons that share its ideals, Radio Maria helps them in establishing a new broadcasting venture in their country.
Radio Maria Malawi
Radio Maria was established for the salvation of souls, namely to announce conversion. In Malawi Radio Maria is the recently established non-commercial and non-profit-making community religious broadcasting radio station operating from the Catholic Diocese of Mangochi with its main studios in the precincts of St John the Baptist Major Seminary. We are called Radio Maria – a Christian voice in your home (Liwu Lachikhristu M’nyumba Mwanu) and have been operational in Malawi since 24 August 1999.
Radio Maria Malawi is a Catholic radio which broadcasts religious and social programmes 24 hours a day. There is no doubt that all of its programs, although in different ways, announce the Lord’s Word. The spirit of Radio Maria is fully grasped in its simple definition of a religiously-inspired community broadcasting station. The primary language used for broadcasting is Chichewa/Chinyanja, the national language of Malawi. Few other programs are in Yao. These are the two prevalent languages within the radio’s catchement area. English programs will be introduced in due course.
